Last day of the trekking

During the trek we've seen heaps of small Karen village but now we are in a pretty big one

P1060056

I don't know which kind of fruit it is but I do like the picture

P1060061

In this village, all the house are built with wood and bamboo and underneath, there is always pork and chicken hanging around!

P1060066

This tourist Karen women is sewing for all the day long some hand made piece of art.

P1060067

With all our tourist crew I guess it was a good day for her

P1060068

After the Karen village, we met 2 Thai people who borow us this hand made weapon you can only find it here

P1060078

Time to enjoy the last waterfallof the trek before the bamboo boat riding

P1060082

P1060083

P1060086

P1060091

Then after eating during a very heavy rain we went to the banboo boat ride.

It's some 8m long bamboo attached together. You have a bamboo driver who has a bamboo stick (bamboo again) and his pushing the bamboo boat with it.  At first you are in the river without a lot of curent and you think it's gonna be boring... But then your bamboo driver is starting to play with his bamboo, making you wet, running on the bamboo boat, pushing you in the waterand it's getting funny. then the current river is getting tougher and you can ry to take the bamboo ofyour driver and try to stir... but alone it's really not easy, if you don't push in the right moment, your boat is just not going in the good direction and you smash the rock... as you are standing for pushing with your bamboo stick, the shock is tricky...

After an hour playing as child on the bamboo boat, it's over... Now it's time to go back to Chiang Mai and I'm getting really tired!!!

P1060093

David was the eldest but you should have seen him on the bamboo boat... He really played like a kid... He is a really cool guy and he slept like a baby till Chiang Mai

P1060094

Back in the hotel, I can take a quick shower, pack my backpack again and then it's time to take the train for Ayutthaya a 5.30PM for an other train night...

Time to say good by to the camp and all the lovely dog

P1050997

In Thailand, they don't own animal in the same way we do in Europe. As they are budhist, dog or cat aren't own by just one person. If a dog is biting someone else and he has to go to the hospital, all the village is gonna pay for the hospital. dog or cat are owned by all the people... Anyway, this dog started from the first hut till the second hut! SO maybe he is owned by both village... Weird but if you see how many dogs there is in a village it's a really good idea that it's not your dog but the dog of everybody! So our dog for the day was digging and looking for thermite

P1050998

Then he challenged the buffalo... Look at the face at the buffalo, such a weird animal! His eyes are so big... He wasn't really affraid by the dog but just didn't know what to do... The dog aw really not affraid by the buffalo and was barking a lot... The buffalo were used to drag heavy thing in the past. Now, they are just too slow compare to tractor. So they are just used to be eaten

P1060001

If you would walk on this tree bridge you would never thnik about driving your motor bike on it... But apparently it's possible

P1060003

1st of June

Today is time to go for the jungle trekking.

First meeting all the team: 4 english girls about 19 - 20 years old. An american couple from San Fransisco 21 and 25. An other American from Alaska living Utah 32 and an Australian girl 20 and of course a French guy who is going to be in deep shit with all those different english accent!  First our guide, Birdy with dread lock and 2 other one stoped at a market to get some vege they will cook for us tonight in a hut....

P1050883

Normal Thai picture from the trunk of our car

P1050884

Ok, here we go for the first part of the trek, elephant riding!

P1050886

First you have to buy some banana in order to feed your elephant. it's more natural than fuel... and really funny to give! I had to sit on the head of the elephant because there were no more place on the bench on the back... I don't care, that was even funnier! You have to put your leg just behind his ear. In the beginning you don't really feel very stable but then you're getting use to it... After a few minutes he is starting to get hot so he keep on shaking his ear... It's a bit annoying for your leg but the poor animal is working for you so I'm not gonna complain. I had a big bag of banana and after 10 minutes I gave him everything... He put his trunk on his head. you put to banana. He put the 2 banana in his mouth and 2 sec later his trunk is going up again to have more... Of course he really don't care about the banana skin... Anyway, allmy banana didn't last long...

P1050891

Siting on his head is quite funny, he has hair on his head and it's really hard hair, like a door matress....

The elephant of the american couple is asking for more banana

P1050895

P1050897

This Thai guy was sleeping on the elephant, Im not kiding... Once he jump of the head and went back on his head lying in the other side. He must be use to it...

P1050898

P1050899

The Australian girl and David the american guy are taking a steep short cut... Or maybe the elephant feel free with his sleepy driver!

Even if you are not walking, on the head you have to be stable and the weather is so hot that it's almost more tiring than walking...

P1050901

This big pot full of water is the shower of the elephant... He is taking water in his trunk and then free shower...

P1050910

P1050914

Ok aftter one hour riding the elephant it's the end. I thought it would be all the 3 days like this! But after one hour, you understood what is elephant riding... I mean tiring... Just an hour is more than enough...

After a rice and vege lunch let's start the jungle trekking by walking an hour till this water fall. Birdy already has to wash his dread lock

P1050928

P1050930

Weird track!

P1050932

Rice field waiting for the rainy season... Might be starting in 2 weeks. They can do the trekking in the rainy season too... I think it's a totally different experience... With blue sky it's hot but the colour are amazing

P1050940

Can you see the buffalo?

P1050941

A banana field

P1050943

That's a stop in a Karen Village. Those people are from Burma. Chiang Mai is really close to Burma... A lot of diferent war with them a long time ago. Now Burma is a poor country and lot of them moved to Thailand but in the beginning they were ilegal. But few years ago, the king gave them ID.... Anyway, if you see where they are leaving, you can imagine that they don't really care ta have ID or not... Their house are just built with bamboo and piece of wood... They are in the middle of nowhere living in harmony with nature... As usual there is some baby dog... SO cute again...

P1050946

The Karen family is staring at us hiden in the shadow. The little girl is shy but her mother push her to sell us some necklace... You can also see on this picture that the roof is built with special hydrophobe leaf.... Normally they have to change it every 3 years... here I guess they are a bit late... Or maybe they are waiting 1 or 2 week for changing it just before the start of the rainy season...

P1050953

P1050954

P1050955

The track is going deeper and deeper in the jungle...

P1050956

This bridge is made with one tree and is maybe 20 m long and very thick... I wonder how they moved it...

P1050959

This is a special ladder in the way that there is only one stick... I tried it and after 2 or 3 m you really don't feel confortable because the cracking noise of the wood... They use it to harvest honey on the top of the tree... And it's maybe 50 m high... I wonder how they can climb on the top without any security...

P1050960

Here we are! That's gonna be our camp for tonight. maybe 4 hut in this "village". And I guess there is more dog than human here... At least 10 dogs...

P1050967

That's the toursit hut, full of colour!

P1050961

Here there is no shower, you have to wash in the river which is 15m far away from the camp...

pano hut 1

Our guides are coming back from the shower and are going to cook us such a delicious real Thai meal

P1050969

Old Thai method to fish

P1050982

While they are cooking, they give us some Thai whisky. Actually, they put some tasty piece of tree bark (écorce) in the whisky and let it ferment for 3 months. When you are walking in the jungle, the guide have big sharp knife and they are always cutting some bambou. For exemple the glasse has been built today with a piece of bamboo. They also show you interesting nature trick that you can't discover without them... there is a plant you can fold and they you blow and it's making bubble in the air... Some wild fruit. A plant you can make up with.... But it look like you are bleeding! Some litlle insect they can grab so fast... Anyway it's really worth to discover the jungle with them because they know a lot about it!

P1050988

Music and whisky for waiting the dinner

P1050992

P1050993

And finally the dinner is ready in the "kitchen". They just have to move it to our table....

P1050994

That was so good! A lot of diferent vege, coconut sauce rice and meat

P1050996

Then cool evening with thai reggae guitar.... and fire jungling

30th of May

Hard to leave The south of Thailand and all the Island. I visted 2 but there is so many that you could stay 2 month just for visiting all the different island there....

Anyway, I took 1h30 of ferry with Romane and Thomas and left themn in Phuket. Airport direction. Fly to Bangkok and an other to Chiang Mai. At 6 PM I'm in the north of Thailand, far away from the paradise island... By the time I manage to get to my hotel, it's 8 o clock.... I haven't sleep that much in last 3 days on Koh PhiPhi. I meet my bed and sleep directly!

31st of May

I've one day to chill out in Chiang Mai before starting my trekking in the jungle tomorow

Chiang Mai is the second biggest city in Thailand but here, the Touk touk driver are a lot more quiet than in Bangkok... I can walk and discover the city without beeing annoyed by them.

After eating a delicious pad thai (rice, vegetable and the meet you want) I found a Thai massage. I think it's the perfect day to experience it. I choose Oil massage for 1 h for 250 BAT (6or7€). She start with my feet! But it's not so tickling, she know how to do it; Then she is going up and do everypart of your body, leg, back, face, arm and finish by your finger. Romane and Thomas are doing a Thai massage every week and they told me that having a 1 hour feet massage is really awesome. you feel like flying when you are walikng in the street then.... That's the good way to work in Bangkok...

Today is really the day of resting. I'm relaxed enough to  be in a drawing mood despite the crazy hot temperature. Let's walk and see what's possible to draw

P1050857

Hum, a bit complicated and I will need shadow...

P1050858

Still no shadow

Ho I really need shadow to draw something like this:

P1050859

Ok let's go inside a temple because I'm really to hot and sweating to much!

Hum I was thinking about drawing the outside of a temple, but now I'm inside one, I feel very confortable. The boudhist atmosphere is really nice and it's not as hot as outside here...

P1050860

Ok let's start it draw... The monk are really interested in my drawing and they come and check my sketch very often...

And 2 hours later

P1050864

Not too bad. My drawing is actually zoomed compared to the picture I took

P1050860P1050864

By the end I finished, the monk are gathering for praying!

P1050867

The 12 different Thai sign

Then it was time to discover the night Market of Chiang Mai and have an other noodle soup and barbecue meet...
I also bought some fruit for 1kg... I couldn't buy for less but it was just 20 BAT(0.5€) it's looking like litchi but it's not anyway that's an other thing you can't explain on a blog but you have to experience in reality!

Dimanche 30 mai 2010 7 30 /05 /Mai /2010 11:26

After 1 hour on a small boat I arrived in Koh Phi Phi totally wet. This Island really look beatutifull. A lot different than Koh Lanta

P1050693

P1050697

P1050701

I start with an other extract of a mail to my father in French...

So I went to this view point after a hot noodle soup. I just went there by wearing a short and nothing else... This island just give you this spirit that you feel relax and so free to do whatever you want

The view point is high enough to make you sweat all your noodle soup. A big stair is going to the first view point

P1050707

Then a tourist track is going to the higher lookout and it let you imagine how the view is gonna be awesome on the top

P1050708

Thailand is just full of what I like the most : amazing beach view and cat

P1050727

pano koh phiphi

And here I'm, on the top of this hill with one of the best view I've ever seen... it's just so beautifull. I could stay for ages on this piece of rock waiting for the sun seting and even rising...

P1050730

P1050731

What a good view for a restaurent... Hard to beat

P1050739

P1050740

I'll always remember this view from this piece of rock

pano koh phiphi 2

Then I saw this sign snorkeling who was leading to the other side of the hill. But that was not the same track to get there... Overall when you are barefoot... But after 30min I get on this beach with nobody on...

P1050741

The sign was right: you can rent mask snorkel and fin for 100 BAT (2.5€)... And in the water, surprise.... first it's warm but not too hot... Actually it was the first time I went in the water because in Koh Lanta, the beach were very rocky and it was not really possible to get in by low tide... The second surprise is when you put your mask and have the first look to the water... it's so clear and so colourfull! In the beginning there is those fish who are curious and just swim fast in front of your mask as to wish you welcome in this beautifull water... Then you are going further and you can see heaps of colourfull reef and so many different kind of fish... Anyway it's not possible to describe it, you have to experience it!

P1050743

here is the kind of fish you can see around Koh Phi Phi. A french guy show me that in the evening, he was a scuba diver teacher and was travelling for 4 years now and always going somewhere else and finding a job everywhere he went... that's a good job...

P1050773

P1050774

Then I met 2 french guy woh fall in love with Thailand and with Thai girls... Actually they met their Thai girl 2 years ago and they are working in France and taking all their holiday in Thailand... Their goal now is to open a restaurant in Thailand like one of their friend did.... Anyway we had a good conversation with beer till it was dark...

P1050745

And I realised that I had to go back by the jungle bare foot without any light...

So they gave me a candle and 2 beers to give me strengh in the jungle

P1050747

Time to sweat beer in the steep track in the jungle

P1050749

After 20 min going uphill, on the top of the hill, there is a family with a guy from the netherland. he is working for them since 3 or 4 month and just get accomodation and food for free... And that's all he need... I can understand him, That's so nice on the top of the hill here... While we were speaking, the family said it was dinner time and I was invited... Cool, a real meal from a Thai family... That was awesome, a big pot of rice, 2 fish and a plate with vegetable from thailand... I think I didn't know any vegetable on this plate but I tried it all. SOme were like asperge, other like brocoli, some vege were spicy, some not, some like pea but each time not exactly the same than in Europe... And you could pick everything in the same big wooden plate. And the way it was cook was so good... I really like Thai food, I was really lucky to meet this familly.! After dinner they showed me their young family cat... that was so cute... I played a long time with like a child!!! That was such a good day again...

P1050756

Then at 10 they all went to bed, so I had to go back to the other side of the hill with my candle again

P1050765

Then I went to the beach where the atmosphere is a lot diferent than on the top of the hill with the Thai family... I met an english couple and stayed with them watching the people jongling with fire

28th of May
Today is the same plan than yesterday, going to this beach again on the other side of the island! By the way this beach is the most famous beach because the most beautifull for snorkeling in Koh Phi Phi... So I was lucky yesterday... And it's so cheap to rent the snorkeling there!!! And I'm sure I'm gonna meet some good people again...
And on the top of the hill, I met Thomas and Romane, both French! they are doing a trainee ship in Bangkok and they got a 3 days week end... So it's for it to get in Koh Phi Phi! How cool is that to work in Bangkok, you can go to this kind of island on the week end... Awesome... There, I said them that I was going on the other side for snorkeling in the beautifull water but Romane didn't want to go. It doesn't matter, Thomas went with me. He is a Gadz'art and is now doing a Phd in Bangkok. He was really lucky in his study because he did 1 year in sweden and 6 month in spain and now 6 month in Bangkok... Anyway interesting guy. We went snorkeling and he was not disapointed about my spot...
After 1 hour walking, we met Romane on the beach on the normal side of the island. She was with 2 guys from the netherlands. Very cool people, Very funny and really good in english... That was a good evening and we almost spent more time in the water than in the pub...
29th of May
Today is my last day in Koh Phi Phi and I booked a boat tour for visiting Koh Phi Phi and most of all Maya bay... The beach were "the beach" (la plage with leonoardo di caprio) was filmed...
On the way to take the boat with all the other tourist, I meet a French couple from grenoble, how small is the world... they are cool, especially the guy...
An then good surprise, Thomas and Romane managed to book the same tour and we can take the same boat. So we are 5 young french people on the boat ready for a beautifull day on the boat...
First let's go to Mya Island

P1050777

First stop: a kind of a pirate cave

P1050781

P1050783

That was looking like the Milford sound in New Zealand. The steep rock faling in the water... A lot smaller than New zealand but that was beautifull too and we could swim in...

P1050785

P1050787

Each time the boat is stopping you can put you mask snorkel and fin on and swim in the beautifull water... Once Vincent the french guy from grenoble let his fin fallen in the 7m deep water... But that the kind of stuff I like so much to dive deep and get the fin back... Then I challenge Romane to jumpr from a boat who was standing close to us and who was a lot higher than our... Maybe 6m high... She was afraid to jumpr from the top level because there were a jump to do over the fence in the lower level... But she made it!

P1050788

P1050793

P1050796

P1050798

And then it's time to arrive on maya bay

P1050800

The most beautifull beach I've ever seen

P1050803

P1050805

P1050807

P1050808

P1050810

I though it was not worth to go in the Island in Thailand after New Zealand and Australia. but then when you are there you really understand why everybody say it's even more beautifull than New Zealand...

P1050813

We hqd our meql on this beach

P1050814

Time to leave this wonderfull spot and see the other side of maya island. This piece of rock was looking really weird because it was really high and looking very thin, like a wall. But then again it's something you have to see in reality

P1050816

Leaving Maya island

P1050853

Time to go back on Koh Phi Phi at Monkey point

P1050823

It's easy to be a monkey there... a lot of boat full of tourist are coming everyday with heaps of banana... What a good life, Rocks and tree to climb and play just over the beautifull sandy beach

P1050825

Romane was taking a picture of the monkey and 5 second later he scratch her on her belly... But no too bad. Anyway it's better not to go to close to them

P1050826

Mister monkey prefer salty banana

P1050828

P1050829

I really like this picture

P1050841

Time to show us your acrobat skill mister monkey

Then we went to shqrk point were Vincent and his girlfriend saw some shark yesterday... But in 30 min we couldn't see any today... What a shame because it's the kind of shark who don't attack you and they are maybe 1.50m long... would have been freaky
P1050852
Then we went to my snorkeling spot of the 2 last days... and I have to say that it's the best spot for snorkeling... so many fish and reef of different colours...
Then we went to Bambou island. On the way to get there, the wind was strong and with the little boat it was making big waves. So we sat  with the leg outside on the boat and got totally wet. But that was better than being a little bit wet because with the fresh wind the smashing water was really hot on our body...
Bambou island had some good reef colour but it was low tide and the reef weren't really deep... and campare to the other spot it's defenitely not as good... then we had to finish with mosquito island but an other boat had a battery trouble so we had to rescue him, Anyway they spent time to fix it and then they decided not to go to the sunset spot because with the wind the waves were getting big... And it was too cloudy by the end of the day to have a good sunset anyway...
On the way back, with Romane we met Alexandra, half italian , half spanish and living in Ushwaya... He was looking like James Bond with his big camera and all his gadget...
Anyway that was funny to meet him again twice on the evening... the first time I had my dinner with him in a restaurant with all the wall full of greeting by customer... It was a really good meal by the way. And the second time, with Romane we saw the James Bond 007 hostel and 2 min later we saw him in a marjet buying coke... So we told him to take some picture of the people jongling with the fire... and he got some good one, I wish I could  get those kind of fancy camera...
Anyway that guy was cool, he was a guide, he begun in argentinia at low level for school and then got some contact and the last 6 years he was a guide in Africa... Now he was travelling, he did New Zealand, Asutralia Thailand and he was going to India and china... Good life... I wish I could be a guide... I'm sure it's not that hard... Just have to try...
In the beginning of the evening we met again the French couple from Grenoble with Thomas and Romane and we stayed on the beach watching the fire jongler but then they were all too tired to go on. Except Romane. So we spent the end of the evening together, but that was awesome, really cool girl! She is 19 years old but she already had some good experience in her life, like fille au pair 2 years ago in UK... that's good for learning english... I wish I would have done that... And now she is in BTS and in this school she had to find a trainee ship abroad... Thailand is really not too bad! I wish I had more possibilty in my study to go abroad... But nothing, I don't care, that's why I decided to go travelling for 10 month abroad on my own... And without the studying stress it's even better!!!!
